Best-selling SUVs from leading makers Toyota, Ford, Kia and Mazda can make ideal road trip vehicles with a wide range of sizes and variants on the market. In the August car sales results, SUV models continue their huge popularity with Australian drivers, making up 60% of total, with several models in the top 10 selling cars overall. In considering what make and model to purchase, buyers can review the latest sales results.
The 10 brands that sold the most new cars overall for August were Toyota, Ford, Kia and Mazda, followed by Hyundai and BYD, then Mitsubishi and GMW, then MG and finally Chery. The results are interesting with Kia in third place, ahead of Mazda and the appearance of several Chinese brands in the top 10.
The Chief Executive of the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries, Tony Weber, made mention of 4 Chinese brands in the top 10 for the first time, when he released the monthly sales data. This, he said, shows the evolving nature of the Australian market.
Latest Best-selling SUVs
The monthly car sales figures are released by the FCAI and detail the top 10 overall models plus the top 3 in individual model category. Overall, the models that sold the most units for the month were Ford’s Ranger, Toyota’s HiLux then its RAV4, the MGZS, Tesla Y, Isuzu D-Max, Ford Everest, then Toyota’s Prado, the Hyundai Kona and Toyota Corolla.
The SUV sales are divided into light, small, medium, large and upper large with price range categories also reported. Allowing buyers to more easily identify the category of the vehicle to consider that meets their individual needs and budget.
In the light category the Mazda CX-3, Toyota Yaris Cross and Hyundai Venue were the best sellers. In the small segment with pricing below $45,000 it was the MGZS, Hyundai Kona and Chery Tiggo 4 that sold the most units. Above $45,000 small SUVs that sold best in August were the Audi Q3, VW T-Roc and the Mercedes GLA.
In the medium size range with prices under $60,000 the best sellers were the RAV4, Mitsubishi Outlander and the Kia Sportage. The Sportage is one of Kia’s leading models and sales of this model one of the reasons attributed to the brand’s great results overall for the month. Buyers looking in the over $60,000 price range for a medium-sized SUV may consider the Tesla Y, though reports have low stock levels so you may need to be quick, or the Lexus NX or the Mazda CX-60.
When a road trip calls for the whole family or large crew of friends plus a whole lot of gear, possibly towing a caravan or boat, a large SUV may be required. Buyers should look at the large models. The models in the price range under $80,000 that have sold best lately are the Everest, Toyota Prado and Isuzu MU-X. A little more money, over $80,000, and take a look at the Land Rover Defender, Toyota Land Cruiser and Nissan Patrol.
The largest sized SUVs are the Upper Large which are obviously larger in size, but also in price. The models to consider are the Land Cruiser, Lexus GX, Patrol, BMW X7, Land Rover Discovery and Mercedes GLS.
For road trippers towing boats and caravans and/or wanting to bring dirt bikes, a cab chassis may also make an ideal choice. These are also very popular as can be seen in the top 10 selling models overall. While Ranger, HiLux and D-Max are perennial top sellers, the new Kia Tasman may also be worth putting on the test-drive list. This is the first cab chassis released in Australia by Kia and is also attributed to the great sales results for the brand. With pricing from early $40,000 through to the $70,000 approximately mark, there are variants to suit many budgets.
