Discover Boating
As the peak boating season approaches, the Boating Industry Association is inspiring novices to get involved in this great recreation with their annual Discover Boating campaign – ‘See You Out There’. A campaign to inspire novices and old hands to get out on the water and enjoy this great recreational activity.
The campaign showcases how boating can be enjoyed for fun, recreation and for sporting activities. The CEO of BIA, Andrew Fielding noting that boating has something to offer everyone with power boating, fishing, family outings, paddling and more. Mr Fielding said boating was accessible and inclusive for all levels of experience, age and budgets.
The campaign is linked with the Association’s resource – Discover Boating. This is an invaluable source of information on many aspects of boating including safety, weather, education, suggestions for places to go, and a great ‘how to’ section. A great starting place for novices to get an overview of how to go about getting out on the water.
Courses to Help Get into Boating
To operate most watercraft, even tinnies and jet skis, a boating licence is required. Licences are issued by the maritime authority in each state and territory. Requirements may differ for each state. Check your state for what initial training and certification is required.
The licence is a basic. Operational skill is a necessity when taking on the responsibilities of the skipper of a watercraft. Courses are available by respected training providers in a range of areas and for different skills levels. Refer to the Education page at Discover Boating for information on courses for all levels of experience.
If sailing is your preferred way to get out on the water, enrolling in a Learn to Sail course can be a great start to learn and meet new crew mates. Sailing clubs can also offer opportunities to learn and sail on club boats while mastering the skills. To find courses, classes and local clubs, refer to Australian Sailing.
The weather plays an important part in on-water activities. Especially if heading offshore for a fishing adventure. But even in enclosed waters, wind, waves and tides can present major risks to boaters. The Bureau of Meteorology provides boaters with a range of resources and alerts include an app for quick reference when out and about.
Boat Owning Considerations
Owing a boat can be a great experience. Deciding what to buy can depend on where you intend to go, your skill level, and of course, your budget. Novices can be drawn to a trailer boat – a small runabout suitable for fishing, family days out, and tow sports.
Entry level models can be sourced from brands such as Malibu Boats, Barcrusher, and the iconic Quintrex. For great value, consider a package deal with the boat, trailer and motor. These are usually available through marine dealers.
Second hand boats can present good value but care should be taken when buying. Order an inspection from a marine engineer or surveyor if unsure of the condition. If buying via online platforms, always take care to verify details before handing over funds. Inspect the boat in person rather than relying only on photos. Buyers that use Jade Finance for their loan can also take advantage of our services to check the PPSR to ensure the boat is not under finance, and other checks we carry out for our customers.
Except for paddle boats and small sailing boats, registration of the boat and trailer will be required. Boats are registered through the state maritime authority. You’ll also need somewhere to moor, store or park the boat when not being used. Maritime authorities can advise on mooring availability. Marinas offer great services and most offer security. Dry dock storage is also a great option and can reduce wear and tear when a boat is left outdoors. If planning to park a trailer boat on the street, check Council regulations.
