Upgrading? Road trip planned? Wondering what are the best SUVs on the market? Latest best sellers to consider

The middle and the end of the year are the two most popular periods for drivers to upgrade their cars. The end of the year can often coincide with the need to get a better vehicle for a holiday road trip. And what could be a better vehicle to head off in but a SUV. But with such a vast range available, buyers may be hard-pressed to decide the best SUVs to consider.

‘Best’ can have numerous interpretations, mean different things to different drivers. While individual brand, style, appearance and size preferences can narrow down the buying options, referring to what is selling best in the current market may provide buying guidance. That information can be found in the monthly vehicle sales reports as provided by the FCAI – the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries. The Chamber compiles sales figures as supplied by manufacturers and compiles the results overall, by best-selling brands, individual models, and across vehicle categories. In the SUV segment, the results are released for a number of categories covering different sized vehicles and price ranges. Valuable intel for buyers!

Buyers may need to be quick to secure their vehicle as the FCAI reports that total vehicle sales are over 1,000,000 for this year so far. Tony Webber, the Chamber’s CEO notes that the market has seen some easing, but the results for last month were very good for an October. We’ve summarised the latest sales results for October so keen buyers can quickly see what the top sellers are in their price and size range, and we overview the financing options available to make the purchase.

Best SUVs Based on October Sales

The SUV has emerged in recent years as a go-to vehicle type for many drivers. It has the versatility to suit families and individuals, business owners, and multiple lifestyles. Manufacturers have responded by continuing to launch new models across multiple segments. But overall, for October and for the past months, Toyota’s RAV4 has been not only the best-selling SUV, but the best-selling vehicle in the market.

If in the market for the smallest SUV available, considered the ‘light’ segment, the Mazda CX-3 was October’s top seller. Next was Toyota’s Yaris Cross and Suzuki’s Jimny. If these are a bit too small for your needs, in the small segment with a price tag below $45,000, it was Hyundai’s Kona that attracted most buyers. Next was the MG ZS and Mitsubishi’s ASX. In the same category but with pricing above $45,000 the Audi Q3 sold the most units followed by BMW X1 and Mercedes’ GLA.

The next segment is medium with pricing below $60,000. This is where the RAV4 stood out and took top spot ahead of Kia’s Sportage and Mitsubishi’s Outlander. For buyers seeking a bit more luxury, for a medium SUV costing more than $60,000, consider the top selling Tesla Model Y, the Lexus NX or Porsche’s Macan.

Got a large family or plenty of gear to stow? A large SUV could be your ideal vehicle. For less than $70,000 most buyers opted for Ford’s Everest ahead of Isuzu’s MU-X and Toyota’s Kluger. For those with deeper pockets and more than $70,000 to invest in a large SUV, check out the Defender by Land Rover, X5 from BMW, or the GLE wagon from Mercedes.

If your work or your play involves heavy terrain or loads more gear the larger SUV could be your choice of vehicle. At below $120,000 Toyota’s LandCruiser sold most units in October ahead of Nissan’s Patrol and the EV9 from Kia. No price or size limit? Over that $120,000 price point the GX from Lexus topped the sales charts, ahead of BMW’s X7 and the LX from Lexus.
