Top Selling Vehicles 2021

Despite lockdowns, shutdowns, virtual showrooms and all the other restrictions imposed to protect the community during the pandemic, many car buyers still found their way to a new car purchase. According to Tony Weber, CEO of FCAI (Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries) in releasing the car sales figures for 2021, despite access to showrooms being restricted, the Australian new car market was positive. The top selling vehicles 2021 have been revealed in the annual sales figures with makes and models for prospective buyers to consider.

Over 1 million new vehicles were purchased in 2021 across Australia which was a 14.5% increase on the result for 2020. If you weren’t in that 1 million and you’re still in the market for a new vehicle, checking out what others have purchased could provide some inspiration and direction.

Lists of top selling vehicles, which are released on both a monthly and annual basis, can indicate which makes and models are popular with buyers. But for 2021 the lists need to be put into context. The past year has seen major disruptions for car manufacturers globally and issues around shipping vehicles into Australia.

The microprocessor shortage has plagued manufacturing in many sectors with major car makers especially hard-hit. So getting behind the wheel of a new car in 2021 may have been more around what vehicles were available to drive-away now rather than exactly what the buyer wanted.

Backgrounding 2021 Sales Results

Mr Weber issued a statement with release of the 2021 new car sales results and stated that the car makers were working hard to improve supply chains in 2022. Several manufacturers have released models for 2022 ahead of schedule which hopefully is a good sign if not a trend for all.

EVs are finally gaining traction in the Australian market after a slow take-up compared with many overseas markets. This segment saw an increase of 191% in sales compared with 2020. But the segment accounts for a very small 0.49% of the total new vehicle market. Non plug-in hybrids sold better than other models.

SUVs continue to rule in the Australian car market. This segment posted an increase of 16.9% for 2021 compared with 2020. Also up were sales of light commercial vehicles in response to the massive increase in online ordering created by the stay-at-home restrictions and isolation rules.

Business vehicle sales were positive as we have experienced ourselves, business owners taking advantage of temporary full expensing to purchase new vehicles for their operations.

Availability is likely to be an issue for some brands in 2022 but low interest rates should continue for the time being. So it looks like it could be worth researching what vehicles are available to meet your requirements and purchase that new vehicle with our cheap car loans in 2022.

Top Sellers

For car makers, making the top seller list can certainly be something to be proud of, knowing so many buyers were attracted to your makes and models. For buyers, it can provide inspiration and possibly interest in a model that you may not have otherwise considered.

For that follow our monthly updates on sales figures over the year, it probably comes as little surprise that Toyota was top in 2021. With an impressive 21% share of the total new car market it was again the leading manufacturer. A position it has consistently held for nearly 20 years.

Next in the top 10 list of best-selling manufacturers was Mazda, Hyundai, Ford and then Kia. Then came Mitsubishi, Nissan, Volkswagen, MG and Subaru. For those that have been in the market looking for a new car, you may be aware of individual delays and issues that individual makers experienced in 2021. Issues which may have suppressed their full sales potential.

The best-selling models is an exciting contest and in 2021 it was close in the top two at least. Over several individual months of sales results we saw the Ford Ranger nudge the iconic Toyota HiLux from its top place. So did this play out in the annual figures? No.

It was Toyota HiLux that outsold Ford Ranger on annual figures, with the RAV4 coming in third. Nex came Toyota Corolla and then LandCruiser. With so many models in the top 5, it’s not surprising that Toyota finished as the top selling brand.

The following 5 top sellers has a greater brand scope with Hyundai i30, Isuzu D-MAX, Mazda CX-5, Prado and Mitsubishi Triton.

For those considering a luxury vehicle it was Mercedes-Benz ahead of fellow German makers BMW and then Audi.
